I am also aspiring for the same goals as yours, but I can;t get a start. I personally think that if u have age with u , u shd start with a degree, e.g a BA and build on that. As for my case I am 33 years of age and belong to a technical background i.e i am an aeronautical engineer with approx. 10 years of experience but i have ahd enougha nd want to follow my dreams. The best thing to do is to study for a Bachelors Degree in an accredited university, one that specializes in Art and Design courses. This should last 3-4 years. Once you complete the course, you'll need to start work as an Assistant/Junior designer under a Senior designer. You could also study for a part-time Masters degree in this time.

Once you've gained a few years of experience, you should be able to look for a better position in another design firm. Later on you could even try to open your own fashion label, or begin to work freelance.

guys after reading all u people comments and viewing you guys desirability of becoming a fashion designer I could 't resist writing this article .
well addressing the point of view of being a designer I' shall say is that opting for a fashion graduation for diploma , is not essential unlike any artistic field. but going to so called topnotch category of fashion college makes you exposed to the fashion fraternity an take you a cupple of fashion weeks and curtain raisers.
As to how to become a fashion designer
there are two ways
1)getting 5 ensembles made , they should be extremely versatile and breathtaking as compared to the rest of the fleet , because you'r entering the design band wagon, get in contact to some good fashion photographers , get a professional model and get your portfolio made. call different multilabels and write something about your intro, collection , contact and soon and attach the portfolio and send it over , if asked by them show them your ensembles.this will cost about 1 lac.
2) get a portfolio made exactly the same way, and get it advertised in top mags create a home based studio with some super design bridals approx 5, 20 hautecouture , 20 couture. and take orders on them. this will cost about 20 lac. And if you want and you have the joras participate in a fashion week. it will cost 2 - 3 lacs.
